Readers' Advisory is about helping a reader find their next good book. It has been part of librarianship for as long as there have been libraries, and is still one of the most basic services provided by library staff and booksellers. Nancy has made readers' advisory the center of her work as a librarian and educator, and began developing her methodology and practices almost forty years ago. Her goal is to ensure that readers' advisors have the skills to help patrons find good books, and she has spent over 15 years teaching her methodology to masters of library science students at the University of Washington.

Nancy believes that when someone asks for help finding a good book, what they are really asking for is help in recreating an enjoyable reading experience. Determining what it is about a particular book that appeals to a reader is the mission of a readers' advisor, and asking about a reader's favorite genre or author isn't always going to get them to that next good book. Over her many years as a readers' advisor (and avid reader), Nancy has developed an approach that focuses on the different ways in which readers experience reading. She calls these the four doorways - how a someone finds their way to an enjoyable book. They include story, character, setting, and language.
