Tom Hanks - Uncommon Letters
The thought of interviewing Tom Hanks in front of an audience of more than 2,000 fans of his had never entered my mind - and believe me, much of the activity of my mind consists of an ongoing series of “what ifs.” So when Ruth Dickey, executive director of Seattle Arts & Lectures, asked me if I would be interested in emailing Hanks about his recently published collection Uncommon Type: Some Stories, I thought, well now, that should be an interesting and entertaining evening. And it was. Tom was gracious and funny, a performer to his bones, and seemed to be a genuinely nice man. Sometimes when I interview an author I end up being less than a fan of theirs, but the opposite was true with Hanks: you’ll find me at the head of the line waiting eagerly for his new film to start.
